Microsoft Azure live in January, for pay in February

Cloud computing was one of several topics that seemed to capture the class's attention this semester. Below is a link to an Internet article that just came out that goes into detail about Microsoft's rollout of its version of cloud computing - Azure.

  1. I just don't know what makes me go so ga ga over cloud computing, Is it the Microsoft connection(I have been a open supporter since eternity)or is it six cups of Americano i had in past 4 hours .Whatever the reason I just love this topic.
Did you realize Microsoft is giving a month of free trial on Azure, does it have to do with vendor locking , Microsoft has always done . I just read in some blog that Microsoft had problems in its billing system, and as always had to roll this baby out sooner ,so they gave a month free of trial. But still I believe it to be one of their business strategy to lock developers.
I also want to know how is it different from Google's cloud offerings. Does it differ more.?Got to wait and see.
Another thing that I believe is that whatever the cloud platform is , according to me , what matters is how it integrates data. I think it is the data integration part that makes the whole cloud platform workable.
What I see in the article that it is made up of 3 components -Windows Azure(scalable , manageable ,blah blah blah),SQL Azure(SQL server in new look , isn't Microsoft good at this), and a a collection of Web services providing reliable asynchronous communications, message queuing, and other glue infrastructure useful for inter operating with the cloud.Does not that sound all Microsoft , does not that suggest that anything apart from Microsoft world is strict no no. How about applications developed on say python , how will they integrate on this platform. How will this main data integration help.
There is also one concern that I read somewhere regarding will Microsoft go on supporting this endeavor,in past it has stopped every thing that does not show money. What happens to all those applications developed on Azure. Google on the other hand can be more trusted.
Hmm what also amazed me that Automatic the creaters of wordpress(open), will take to use Azure . Interesting that is.

Ialso read in some blogs that it is supporting virtual developement environment to various SDK's like JAVA, PHP , and so on. That will be interesting, I dont know if Google does that.
Any ways Azure sounds interesting .

  2. Heh, I think the companies in the contest I did with the Azure product last week get it for 8 months for free.

We had some random buggy issues with Azure, like strange reasons that we couldn't connect and such, using it last week, but that's really the only limited experience I have with it. One of the guys said that every time we called tech support, a guy in the giant server room pulled a huge oversized switch to restart the cloud, since a restart fixes all Microsoft problems, lol.

And I used Chrome and Flash the whole time I was there. I am not ashamed!

  4. It was really cool! I made some really awesome contacts, guys who have started several businesses and such, and even got a lead on a job through it. We didn't win anything but a graduate certificate, but it was well worth the time. Made me eager to start another business!

  5. With Microsoft taking a overt stake in cloud computing, it will be interesting to see if they can dominate. Hopefully they can add their resources to cloud computing, and facilitate some of the "development opportunities" mentioned in the artice, without having a "net" detrimental influence.

  6. Lets wait and see whether microsoft dominates or not..In some other blog, I have learnt that there are outages caused by cloud... We cant say..there might be outages in this cloud also....
